artistic noise: art from the juvenile detention system and beyond Shade Project The Dunlevy Milbank Restart Program,
The Next Generation Center

The Window Shade Project grew from the curators' exhibition title, "Rising," and their focus on moving through struggle and searching for freedom. Each piece is painted directly onto a fabric window shade and reflects the particular artist's vision. Some used the movement of the shade rising, considering an evolution from bottom to top as the shade unfurls. Others were inspired by the concept of what a shade reveals and conceals. The artists depicted the challenges young people face, such as pregnancy, drugs, incarceration, death, violence, as well as representing visions of freedom in the feeling of flying, growing, and dreaming.
