artistic noise: art from the juvenile detention system and beyond I am Spectrum, Spectrum Detention Center
Artists: Annina, Ashanay, Chelsey, Kayley, Kiesha, Star

For the project "I am Spectrum" girls at Spectrum Detention created two portraits that give the viewer a glimpse into their experience while in detention. The girls collaborated to come up with poses that expressed their feelings about being in lock-up. They worked together to photograph the poses and incorporate their surroundings into the compositions. Working from the photographs they took, they created two monochrome paintings. During the project, the girls learned how to create a monochromatic palette made up of shades of the same hue and explored the emotive quality of color.
